BC Stats is providing this test site for interactive, thematic data display. This ARC/IMS web-mapping application will allow
users to choose from a select subset of data variables for mapping a number of ranges of data values. The geographic
unit this test site uses is Local Health Areas, an analytical geography used within the Ministry of Health. Using this system,
clients will be able to look at the distribution of ranged values of each selected data set across the province.
To use this system, print out and follow the steps below (but don't forget to explore!). Please read this before using the application:
- - load the thematic mapping page
- - click on the 'Thematic Display' text link in the upper left part of the screen
- - when the 'Thematic Rendering Tool' window pops up (or a new tab opens):
- - first click in the 'Select data' area, and select the general data theme (e.g. '2001 Census')
- - the 'Field' area will now be populated with specific data variables
- - select a data variable (e.g. 'Percent of total population born in B.C.)
- - click in the box with the number '5' in it to select from 3 to 7 data ranges for your data variable
- - click in the next box with the colour schemes to select a colour scheme (3 are available)
- - in the next box, select manner that the data will be 'split up' in to ranges for the display - note that selecting
'Equal Interval' splits the data up evenly from highest to lowest values in equal ranges (given the number of
data ranges you're selected), while "Equal Distribution' splits the data according to the number
of regions and the number of data ranges you've selected
- - now click 'Get Map' and watch how the map changes
- - to select another data set, variable or any other choice, just change the value as above in the popup
- and click 'Get Map' again
- - to take the map back to it's original clear state, please click on the 'Reset/Clear Map' text link on the map page
- - note that the 'Thematic Rendering Tool' popup box will stay up as a separate window, and will be open even when on the
main map display page you click on the 'Reset/Clear Map' text link
As there is an important set of 'Map Tools' on the map page, that allows the user to select and perform operations such as (among others) 'zoom-in',
'select regions', and 'clear selections', we strongly recommend that you take a look at a preview
of what these Tools will do.
To start, just click on this link.
